Katie Scherman

Katie Scherman is an artist, choreographer, teacher, and movement researcher currently based in Tokyo, Japan.  She is a 2009 Princess Grace Award Winner in Dance Performance and a 2008 nominee for an Isadora Duncan Award in Group Performance.  She was one of 14 women to be selected to present and perform her work at the 2018 Women in Dance Conference in NYC.  She was awarded a 2017-2018 BodyVox Artist Residency, where she premiered 'To Have it All' in Portland, OR.  Her project, Katie Scherman + Artists, was launched in 2018, as a means for collaboration, movement research, and artistic contribution to communities across the globe.  Scherman was recently selected to present her new work "three" for the 2019 Fukuoka Dance Fringe Festival in Fukuoka, Japan. "Three" was selected as the New Dance Asia prize winner in Fukuoka.

Scherman began her training in California at Anaheim Ballet with additional studies at Ballet Pacifica, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Houston Ballet.  At 15, she joined Houston Ballet II where she was featured in works by Ben Stevenson, George Balanchine, August Bournonville, Stanton Welch, and Brian Enos.  Scherman has performed with Houston Ballet, Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, Washington Ballet, Hubbard Street 2, Zhukov Dance Theatre, Terpsicorps Dance Theatre, Lively Arts Foundation, Bodyvox, and in numerous tours and festivals around the world. Scherman holds a BFA in Dance from LINES Ballet/Dominican University and an MFA in Dance from the University of Oregon. She was awarded a graduate teaching fellowship at the University of Oregon from 2012-2015 and is the 2015 recipient of the UO Graduate Student Emerging Artist Award.  Her research is deeply rooted in the creative process, vulnerability, and collaboration.  Scherman has taught at LINES Ballet BFA program, American College Dance Festival, University of Utah, SALT Dance Fest, Northwest Dance Project, BodyVox, LINES Ballet Summer Intensive, BodyVox Junior Artist Program, Laguna Dance Theatre, Eugene Ballet Academy, NW Dance Festival, Reed College, among others.  Spring 2017, Scherman held a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the School of Dance at the University of Utah where she taught, choreographed, and mentored students.
 
Scherman has held guest residencies at University of Utah, LINES Ballet/Dominican University BFA program, Pacific University, and the Bodyvox Junior Artist Generator program, where she created original works.  Her choreography has also been presented at GALA for the 2015 and 2017 American College Dance Conferences, LINES Ballet BFA concerts, Cornish College for the Arts Senior solo performance, (A)merging Dance Festival, DanceWire Refinery, ACDA Informal Concert, LINES Ballet Senior Solo performances, Women in Dance Conference, Dance in Dialogue, Salt Dance Fest, and the LINES Ballet summer Intensives.
 
Scherman was awarded a 2016 Alembic Artist Residency at Performance Works NW where she premiered her first evening length piece, Complicated Women.  In summer 2017, Scherman was commissioned by Ching Ching Wong, former dancer with NWDP, to create a solo in collaboration with violinist Joe Kye for their 2017-2018 world tour, Migrants.  Fall 2017, she was commissioned by SALT II Contemporary Dance Company to create a new work, I love you, which premiered spring 2018 in SLC, Utah.  Scherman is currently a guest teacher at Studio Architanz in Tokyo, Japan.
