Scott Turner Schofield is a man who was a woman, a lesbian turned straight guy who is mostly read as a gay man, who creates theater about gender and sexuality in the Deep South. Obviously, his work centers on comedic contradictions.

While a senior at Emory University, Schofield created his first solo performance Underground Transit, which he began touring to colleges, festivals, and theaters nationwide in 2001, and was censored in 2006 for nudity. His second piece, Debutante Balls, followed in 2004. Working with the Pat Graney Company, 7 Stages, and DiverseWorks, Schofield became the first openly transgender artist to be commissioned by the National Performance Network in 2007. His third solo effort, Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps has sold out every run since its premiere in October 2007 and was censored in 2010 for nudity.

Schofield is a popular performer on the college circuit, where he also lectures on gender identity and facilitates workshops on creating performance for social change. His first book, a memoir of performance texts, Two Truths and a Lie, was a Finalist for 2 Lambda Literary Awards in 2008, and was included on the American Library Association's Rainbow List in 2009. is available now from his website, online booksellers, and at independent bookstores.

Scott is now the Executive and Artistic Director of Out North Contemporary Art House in Anchorage Alaska. Artists in live performance and film are welcome to contact him at scott@outnorth.org with proposals. Out North hosts artists in Anchorage on a rolling basis: artists seeking incubation opportunities are encouraged to be in touch.
