Gisela Cardenas has worked in the UK, Germany, Peru, Brazil, Romania, The Netherlands, Norway, and the USA. Awards and Memberships: Princess Grace Theater Fellowship (2007), 2008 Phil Killian Directing Fellow (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), 2008-10 Women's Project Director’s Lab, recipient of the TCG/ NEA 2009/2011 Career Development Program for Directors and a member of the Society Directors and Choreographers Foundation. Princess Grace Special Project Award (2012). Gisela was one of the six International Directors invited for one month to The Royal Shakespeare Company in the UK, to attend a workshop for Directors given by Cicely Berry in 2011.
Ms. Cardenas has an M.A in Performance Studies (New York University) and an M.F.A in Directing (Columbia University). Credits as Director and Writer: a contemporary adaptation of Agamemnon(Drama Desk Nomination 2006/Directing), In Deliriumadapted after Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther; Firesafter Marguerite's Yourcenar book of short stories. Selected Credits as director: Jose Watanabe’s Antigone(Sibiu International Theater Festival—Romania), Kander & Ebb's Kiss of The Spider Woman(Vortex Theater Company); HotInk Festival 2008-2009; Part 1 of An Oresteia(Classic Stage Company), Maria Irene Fornes' Tango Palace& Dr. Khealfor the 2010 New York Fornes Festival, Euripides' Medea(Perú-Argentina), Brecht's In The Jungle of The Cities(The Netherlands-Peru), Richard III(Norway), Weskler's The Kitchen, Fassbinder’s Katzelmaher(Barnard College), Peter Asmussen’s Nobody meets Anyone(Brazil), Mary Stuart(Barnard College) and Naomi Wallace's One Flea Spare(ETW/NYU).
In 2015 she founded InTandem Lab, a performance company where Gisela currently serves as Artistic Director. With InTandem Lab: Instructions to Decode A(n In)human Transformation(Writer), Hybrid Suite No 2: The Carmen Variations(a devised electronic opera based on Bizet’s Carmen) at Here Arts Center/ HARP Resident. Upcoming: An Isle Full of Noisesa sonic performance of the Tempest, Dying for It(Writer and Director), Richard III(NYU); and Sergio Blanco’s Thebes Land(South America).
