Dance Honoraria, 2016
Chyrstyn Mariah Fentroy was born in Los Angeles, California where she began her dance training under the direction of her mother, Ruth Fentroy. At the age of 17, she moved to New York City after being offered a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet School. In her first year there, she was invited to join the Joffrey Ballet School Performance Company (now the Joffrey Concert Group) where she was given the opportunity to perform principal roles in ballets such as Gerald Arpino's Birthday Variations and Augustus Bournonville's La Ventana across the East Coast. Chyrstyn is currently in her fifth season with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. In her professional career, she has had the opportunity to perform internationally in Italy, Israel, Honduras, and Turkey. Some of her principal repertory with the company includes George Balanchine's Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and Agon, The Black Swan Pas de Deux from act III of Swan Lake, Alvin Ailey's The Lark Ascending, Nacho Duato's Coming Together, and Helen Pickett's When Love. In January, 2015, Fentroy was featured on the cover of Dance Magazine as one of the "25 Dancers To Watch".
