A native of Toronto, Canada, (director and performer) Charlotte Brathwaite joined the internationally renowned La MaMa E.T.C’s Great Jones Repertory Company as an actor at the age of 16 and performed in New York and in over 12 countries with the company. As a freelance director, her work has been presented in theaters in America, Mexico, the Netherlands, India, Germany, Austria, Trinidad and Croatia. Recently, she directed the workshop production of Woman Bomb by Ivana Sajko at the Baryshnikov Arts Center; The Coming... at the Living Theater; Kleopatra: The Dead Don’t Bite by Naturaleza Humana and the Aarshi Theater Company in Kolkata, India; Smile Orange by Trevor Rhone at the Little Carib Theatre in Trinidad, West Indies; American Schemes by Radha Blank at New York City Summerstage; Christina Anderson’s Good Goods; Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.
She holds a Bachelors of Arts from the Amsterdam School for the Arts in the Netherlands and a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the Yale School of Drama. Charlotte is co-founder of the Berlin based performance group Naturaleza Humana. She has assistant directed for Yale Repertory Theater, Lincoln Center, Yale Opera and Director Robert Wilson. This summer she looks forward to assisting Opera Director Francesca Zambello at the Glimmerglass Festival as part of the Young Artist Program. Most recently she shadowed Director Joel Zwick (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) on set at Disney in Los Angeles.
Charlotte is recipient of a Princess Grace Foundation George C. Wolfe Award, a Princess Grace Foundation/Baryshnikov Arts Center New Works Residency and the Julian Milton Kaufman Prize among others.
