Andrea Assaf is a theater director, performer, writer and cultural organizer. She is the Founding Artistic Director of Art2Action, Inc. Andrea is a former artist-in-residence with Pangea World Theatre (2010-11), Artistic Director of New WORLD Theater (2004-09), and Program Associate for Animating Democracy (2001-04). Her theater work ranges from interdisciplinary, solo and collaborative productions, to spoken word. She has created and directed original works at NWT, the NY International Fringe Festival, the National Asian American Theater Festival, and has toured internationally to Mexico, Poland, Nicaragua and Canada. Original works include: Eleven Reflections on September (touring 2011-15), Outside the Circle with Samuel Valdez (2012), and Fronteras Desviadas/Deviant Borders, created in collaboration with Dora Arreola and Mujeres en Ritual Danza-Teatro (2005-06). Directing credits include: Speed Killed My Cousin by Linda Parris-Bailey and The Carpetbag Theatre (2012-15), breaking letter(s) by Suheir Hammad (2008), Sheekadii Walaalo/Sister Story by the Walaalo! Somali Sisters Collective (2008), and Parang Sabil by Kinding Sindaw (2007). In addition to the Princess Grace Awards, she’s also a recipient of a FY11 Creation Fund Commission from the National Performance Network, a 2007 Hedgebrook residency for "women authoring change," and a 2004 grant from Cultural Contact (U.S.-Mexico Foundation for Culture). Andrea has a Masters degree in Performance Studies and a BFA in Acting from NYU. She serves on the Board of Alternate ROOTS, the Board of Directors of the Consortium of Asian American Theaters & Artists (CAATA), and the International Management Committee of Women Playwrights International (WPI). She's also a member of RAWI, the Radius of Arab American Writers.
